thoughts in class
Some things I thought about in class today..
1. We have the ingredients for a global hub city, the education, the infrastructure etc, but not the recipe. With the ingredients, we can somehow figure out the recipe, but we haven't. Maybe this is because we are missing the most important ingredient of all. We have the tangibles, but not the intangibles, the heart and spirit of the people.
2. We are not initiators, just followers. We follow the trend of the more advanced countries (eg education, baby policies), instead of coming up with special policies to suit the needs of the people at the right time. Maybe this is why Singaporeans tend to have little or no originality, preferring to regurgitate and be copycats (eg in schoolwork and fashion), rather than come up with something unique of our own.
3. Now, life is so fast-paced, everyone is rushing to do something, to go somewhere, we never simply take the time to observe what's happening around us. Why should we observe if it's not going to be on our exam, is our mentality. In the past, although the life expectancy was low, the life was more relaxed and enjoyable. With present medical technology and advancements in the field, our life expectancy can be as high as 120 years. Maybe we are simply prolonging our stress and hectic lives. With such high life expectancies, MM has proposed the idea of a later retirement. Are we going to work until we're 80? Will we just stress ourselves so much that we end up dying earlier?
4. The government has introduced the through-train system in schools. They have emphasised the pros of continuity, being able to explore each topic more in depth because they have more time to learn, and only the best students were chosen for the pilot system. Maybe they are trying to emphasise also that the government's through-train is also something that is effective and good for the overall well-being of the people, because now people are more savvy, they also have more choices for Ministers, and perhaps the government wants to retain it's majority power.
